An Introduction

Submental liposuction — also known as neck liposuction — by Scottsdale board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Carlos Mata can be a beneficial treatment for men and women needing to create a sleeker, slimmer neck and a stronger facial profile. Extra fat within the neck area may give a person the appearance of having a double chin. With neck liposuction, the excess fat is suctioned out of the area for a slimming effect. Some patients won't be candidates for liposuction alone — many with loose and sagging skin may also consider having a neck lift (a skin removal and tightening technique) to achieve the best results. Dr. Mata (a.k.a. Dr. Scottsdale®) will determine which procedure is right for you and design your treatment plan.

01
Combined Option

Complement with a Neck Lift

A neck lift removes hanging skin and reshapes the neck. During the procedure, an incision is placed under the chin and/or behind or in front of the ears. If fat deposits are present and need to be removed, liposuction will be used during the surgery and performed first. The final steps of treatment are to trim away excess skin, pull the remaining underlying tissue and muscle tightness, and suture the incision.

02
Surgical Technique

How Neck Liposuction is Performed

During a neck liposuction procedure, a tiny incision is made underneath the chin and a small cannula is inserted so excess fat deposits may be suctioned. After the desired amount of fat has been removed, small sutures close the incisions. This procedure leaves minimal scarring.

A number of surgeons prefer to use the tumescent liposuction technique ("super wet") — which includes a numbing solution combined with a substance that helps control bleeding.

03
Recovery

During and After Surgery

Neck liposuction surgery is always performed in our surgical center with the use of IV or deep sedation (patients are breathing on their own). It is an outpatient procedure — but patients are advised to have someone stay with them for at least the first 24 hours.

It's important to avoid putting any pressure on the neck, and patients will be advised to sleep sitting up for a few days. A restricted diet will also be required to help aid healing. Results are often obvious immediately after surgery, with optimal improvement seen after a few months.

Candidacy

Is This Right For You?

You may be a candidate if...
  • Men and women with extra fat within the neck area causing a double chin
  • Patients with isolated fat deposits (not loose, sagging skin)
  • Patients in good overall health able to tolerate IV or deep sedation
  • Patients willing to follow post-op restrictions (sleep sitting up, restricted diet)
This may not be right if...
  • Patients with significant loose and sagging skin — may need a neck lift instead (or in combination)
  • Active smokers unable to stop before surgery

Candidacy is ultimately a conversation. Dr. Mata will determine the right path at consultation.
