An Introduction

Rhinoplasty is the most technically demanding procedure in cosmetic surgery. A single millimeter of change can transform a face — for better or worse. Dr. Mata's approach is conservative, preservation-focused, and designed to produce a nose that looks naturally yours, not surgically altered.

01
Our Approach

Preservation Rhinoplasty

Modern rhinoplasty emphasizes preservation over reduction. Rather than aggressively removing structure and hoping the nose heals predictably, Dr. Mata preserves the natural anatomic framework where possible and reshapes it. This approach produces more natural results, more predictable healing, and a lower revision rate.

For most patients, this means a closed or limited open approach with conservative dorsal adjustment, precise tip refinement, and careful attention to the relationship between nose, lip, and chin.

02
Common Concerns

What We Can Address

Rhinoplasty can address a range of concerns: a dorsal hump, a drooping or bulbous tip, a wide nasal bridge, a nose too long or too short for the face, asymmetry, or breathing problems. Functional rhinoplasty addresses breathing issues (often from a deviated septum) and can sometimes be partially covered by insurance.

Importantly, not every concern can be fully corrected — nasal skin thickness, underlying structure, and healing all impose limits. Dr. Mata will be honest about what's achievable for your specific nose.

03
Revision Rhinoplasty

Correcting Previous Surgery

Revision rhinoplasty is significantly more complex than primary rhinoplasty. Scar tissue, altered anatomy, and previous cartilage work all constrain what's possible. Results are more variable, and often require cartilage grafting from the ear or rib.

Dr. Mata accepts revision cases when the original concerns can be meaningfully improved. He'll be direct with you at consultation if he believes your specific revision is better handled by a revision specialist or if expectations aren't realistic.

Benefits

Why Rhinoplasty

  • 01Refinement that harmonizes the nose with your other features
  • 02Preservation approach produces natural-looking results
  • 03Can address functional breathing issues simultaneously
  • 04Permanent result — the nose doesn't age like soft tissue
  • 05Scars are internal or hidden in the columella (outside the nostrils)
Candidacy

Is This Right For You?

You may be a candidate if...
  • Specific, identifiable concerns about nasal appearance
  • Realistic expectations about what can be changed
  • Skeletal maturity (generally 16+ for girls, 17+ for boys)
  • Good overall health and non-smoker
  • Willing to follow activity restrictions strictly for 6–8 weeks
This may not be right if...
  • Still growing (wait until skeletal maturity)
  • Active smokers unable to quit
  • Unrealistic expectations about transformation
  • Body dysmorphic patterns of concern

Candidacy is ultimately a conversation. Dr. Mata will determine the right path at consultation.

What to Expect

Every patient heals at their own pace. These milestones offer a realistic roadmap based on hundreds of procedures performed by Dr. Mata.

  1. Week 1

Splint on nose. Rest at home with head elevated. Bruising around eyes peaks day 3–5. No nose blowing. Breathing feels congested — normal and temporary.

  2. Week 2

Splint removed. Most bruising gone or easily covered with makeup. Return to desk work. Still significant swelling but not obviously surgical to others.

  3. Weeks 3–6

Light activity resumes. No contact sports or activities that risk nose impact. Swelling steadily decreasing but tip still thick.

  4. Weeks 6–12

Full exercise with clearance. 70–80% of final shape visible. Nasal breathing fully restored.

  5. Month 6–12

Final shape emerges as deep swelling (especially at the tip) fully resolves. Patience is required — rhinoplasty takes up to a year to fully settle.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions

01How long until I look normal?+

Most patients are socially presentable at 2 weeks with makeup. The tip swelling takes 6–12 months to fully resolve, but by week 3–4 you'll look like yourself. Just don't expect the final refined tip for several months.

02Will it affect my breathing?+

It can improve it if you have a deviated septum or other obstruction — Dr. Mata often corrects these simultaneously. The goal is always to improve, not compromise, nasal airflow. If breathing is a concern, tell us at consultation so we can address it.

03Can I see what my nose will look like beforehand?+

Dr. Mata uses digital imaging during consultation to show potential outcomes — but with an important caveat: computer morphs are communication tools, not guarantees. Your specific anatomy, healing, and tissue thickness all affect the actual result.

04What if I'm not happy with the result?+

Wait a full year before judging. Swelling resolves over 6–12 months, and what looks 'too much' at month 2 often looks just right at month 10. If after a year you'd like refinement, revision is possible — but it's significantly more complex than primary surgery.
