Multiple Approaches Available
There are several techniques used for rhinoplasty. The approach taken will be based on the complexity of the surgical case and the overall goal of the patient.

Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) changes the external appearance and internal function of your entire nose. The purpose of this procedure by Scottsdale, AZ board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Carlos Mata is to enhance your looks while maintaining or improving your ability to breathe through your nose. Dr. Mata's sense of aesthetics, understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the nose, and technical abilities are the most important determinants of the final appearance and function of your nose shaping procedure. Your final outcome is also influenced by your genetic variables — such as the thickness and shape of your bones and cartilage, quality and thickness of your skin, overall facial shape, and age. In some cases, patients are surprised when Dr. Mata (a.k.a. Dr. Scottsdale®) recommends treatment for a receding chin rather than a rhinoplasty. It is quite common to perform chin augmentation alone or in combination with rhinoplasty to balance facial features.

During closed rhinoplasty surgery, incisions are made to the inside of the nose through the nostrils. This is a common technique for patients who desire mild reshaping. This approach does not cause visible scarring. For severe reshaping cases, the open technique will be implemented.
For minor reshaping, some patients may opt to try an injectable filler to achieve results. These come in a variety of liquid substances, and sometimes a fat transfer can also be utilized. A filler can help add volume to hide small deformities, such as a bump or a bony appearance.
It is important to note that fillers can only do so much in the reshaping process. For most patients, surgery is a better option and will offer a permanent solution.
Rhinoplasty is performed in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. The procedure lasts up to 2 hours and is considered outpatient.
After surgery, there will be swelling and soreness around the nose area. Bruising is also a side effect of surgery. The nose will be placed in a splint for additional support. During the first 7-10 days following surgery, the side effects will begin to disappear and the splint will be removed.
Patients will be able to see their results immediately — however, it may take several months for the full results to appear.
Around half of all rhinoplasty cases will include some form of nose breaking in order to allow the surgeon to reshape the cartilage and bone. This is primarily intended for patients who have nasal asymmetry. The broken bone or cartilage will be reshaped and reattached, and then supported by splints during recovery.
Candidacy is ultimately a conversation. Dr. Mata will determine the right path at consultation.

Swelling, soreness, and bruising after surgery. The nose is placed in a splint for support. During the first 7-10 days, side effects begin to disappear and the splint is removed. Results are visible immediately, with full results developing over several months.
Sometimes a receding chin (not the nose) is creating the imbalance the patient wants to fix. Chin augmentation can be performed alone or in combination with rhinoplasty to balance facial features.
For minor reshaping (e.g., hiding a bump), filler can help. Fillers can only do so much in the reshaping process — for most patients, surgery is a better option and offers a permanent solution.
