An Introduction

A breast lift, or mastopexy, raises and reshapes the breasts by removing excess skin, tightening surrounding tissue, and repositioning the nipple to a more youthful position. It's the right procedure when your breasts have the volume you want but have shifted downward over time.

01
When a Lift Alone

Lift vs. Augmentation — or Both

A breast lift alone is the right choice when you have enough volume but your breasts have descended, the nipple sits at or below the inframammary fold, or the breast shape has flattened over time. You can expect firmer, perkier breasts at the same approximate size.

If you want both lift and more volume, augmentation with lift combines implants with the mastopexy procedure. If you've simply lost volume (common after breastfeeding) but the breast position is still good, a simple augmentation may be enough. Dr. Mata will help you understand which approach matches your anatomy at consultation.

Our Techniques

Scar Patterns Explained

Breast lift scars follow predictable patterns, and which one you need depends on how much tissue must be repositioned. The three common patterns are: peri-areolar (around the nipple only — minimal lift), vertical or "lollipop" (around the nipple plus a vertical line to the fold — moderate lift), and anchor or "Wise-pattern" (peri-areolar, vertical, and along the fold — significant lift).

Dr. Mata uses the minimum scar pattern that will achieve your result. Scars fade significantly over 12–18 months with proper care, though they never disappear entirely.

03
Longevity

How Long Results Last

Breast lift results typically last 10–15 years or more. Gravity, aging, weight fluctuation, and additional pregnancies will all continue to affect the breasts — a lift doesn't stop time, but it resets it meaningfully.

The longevity of your result depends heavily on factors within your control: maintaining a stable weight, wearing a supportive bra consistently, and avoiding smoking. For patients who plan future pregnancies, we typically recommend waiting until your family is complete before proceeding.

Candidacy

Is This Right For You?

You may be a candidate if...
  • Breasts have descended after pregnancy, weight loss, or time
  • Volume is acceptable — position is the main concern
  • At or near a stable long-term weight
  • Not planning future pregnancies
  • Non-smoker or able to quit for 6 weeks before and after
This may not be right if...
  • Planning future pregnancies
  • Significant weight still to lose
  • Primarily concerned with volume (consider augmentation)
  • Active smokers unable to quit

Candidacy is ultimately a conversation. Dr. Mata will determine the right path at consultation.

Recovery

What to Expect

Every patient heals at their own pace. These milestones offer a realistic roadmap based on hundreds of procedures performed by Dr. Mata.

  1. Week 1

Rest at home. Surgical bra worn continuously. No lifting over 5 pounds. Walking encouraged. Pain typically manageable with medication in the first 2–3 days.

  2. Week 2

Most patients return to desk work. Surgical bra continues. No overhead reaching or lifting. Swelling still significant.

  3. Weeks 3–4

Light activity resumes. Transition to soft supportive bra. Scars still pink and raised — this is normal.

  4. Weeks 6–8

Exercise resumes with Dr. Mata's clearance, including chest and upper body. Underwire bras can return.

  5. Month 3–12

Final shape settles. Scars progressively lighten and flatten over 12–18 months with scar care.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions

01Will my breasts be smaller after a lift?+

Typically about the same size, sometimes a half-cup smaller because the lift removes stretched skin and tightens everything up. If you want noticeably larger breasts, a lift with implants is the right combined procedure.

02Can I still breastfeed after a lift?+

Often yes, but not guaranteed. Mastopexy disrupts some milk ducts and some nerve pathways, which can reduce milk production or sensation. If breastfeeding is a priority, we typically recommend waiting until you're done.

03Will the scars be visible?+

They'll be visible to you, but they follow natural contours that are hidden by most bras and bathing suits. Scars are pink initially and fade to thin lighter lines over 12–18 months. Silicone scar therapy starting at 4 weeks post-op helps significantly.

04How long does a lift last?+

Typically 10–15 years, often longer. Gravity, aging, weight changes, and pregnancy continue to affect breast tissue after surgery — a lift resets your position but doesn't prevent further changes over decades.
