Motherhood is beautiful, and so are you. A mommy makeover by our Scottsdale, AZ board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Carlos Mata, a.k.a. Dr. Scottsdale®, and Dr. Martin Benjamin, means a combination of different cosmetic procedures that target areas of the body affected by pregnancy like breasts, abdomen, hips, and thighs. The mommy makeover is fully customizable to your goals and can include breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck surgery, fat transfer, and/or liposuction.

What is Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is used to describe a customized combination of cosmetic procedures
to restore a woman’s body shape and appearance after pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.
This makeover typically addresses changes in the breasts, abdomen, waist, and buttocks.
A Mommy Makeover is commonly composed of procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction, and in some cases, a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL). The goal is to tackle issues such as sagging breasts, loose skin, stretch marks, and excess fat, helping mothers regain their pre-pregnancy body confidence. Each Mommy Makeover is tailored to the individual’s specific needs and aesthetic goals, making it a highly personalized treatment plan.

Surgical Techniques

The surgical techniques used by Scottsdale Mommy Makeover specialists Dr. Carlos Mata and Dr. Martin Benjamin are tailored to suit the specific conditions of each body area that the patient desires to enhance.
The procedure is fully customizable to your needs and goals.

Breast

Typical concerns for many women post-pregnancy are sagging and loose skin, along with a decrease or increase in breast volume. Depending on individual needs, surgeries like breast augmentationbreast reductionbreast lift, and/or breast lift with implants. Often, a blend of these procedures, such as breast augmentation paired with a lift, is employed to achieve a youthful and aesthetically pleasing breast appearance after pregnancy.

Common concerns include loose skin, surface irregularities like stretch marks, and stubborn fat deposits. These are normally addressed with liposuction and by a no drain tummy tuck to trim away the excess skin and ‘lift’ the remaining skin to a new position. The no drain tummy tuck procedure allows faster recovery, reduces the risk of complication, and gives you better results.

Because every mom is different, it’s common to have an add-on specifically chosen for her. One of the most common add-ons is the Brazilian Butt Lift to increase and shape the buttocks and hips.

Why do we offer no drain tummy tuck during our mommy makeovers?

Who’s a candidate
for a Mommy Makeover?

Healthy women who do not plan to have another pregnancy and have tried their best to recuperate their post-pregnancy shape through diet and exercise to no avail are the best candidates for the mommy makeover. The mommy makeover procedure can be done as soon as 6 months after being done breastfeeding. After the surgery, you will be able to have another pregnancy, but your results may be altered. For long-lasting results, pregnancy after the procedure should be avoided.
Furthermore, it’s crucial for Mommy Makeover candidates to maintain a stable weight since major weight changes can affect the outcomes of the surgery. Women considering this procedure should have realistic expectations about its capabilities; it’s intended to refine and improve the existing body shape, not to transform it completely. Good candidates are also those who understand the recovery process and are able to take the necessary time off for healing

Post-op care instructions are vital to allow the scar tissue to become strong
to support your results long-term. Optimal results will be evident about three months after the procedure once your butt implants have had time to settle, swelling goes down, and scars heal.

Benefits of Mommy Makeover Procedure

The Mommy Makeover Scottsdale, a surgical procedure performed by our board-certified plastic surgeon, is a tailored combination
of cosmetic surgeries designed to address the physical changes women often encounter following pregnancy and childbirth. Its primary objective is to rejuvenate the body to its pre-pregnancy state. These are the advantages of Mommy Makeover procedures, which offer a range of empowering benefits that positively impact the individual’s overall well-being:

Enhanced Physical Appearance

Restored Breast Shape and Size: Pregnancy and breastfeeding often result in alterations in breast size and can cause the breasts
to sag. A Mommy Makeover often includes breast augmentation or a breast lift, helping to restore or even improve breast appearance.

Toned Abdominal Area: A tummy tuck, part of most Mommy Makeovers, removes excess skin and tightens abdominal muscles, resulting in a contoured and flatter stomach.

Reduced Excess Fat: Liposuction, another common component, targets and removes stubborn fat deposits, refining the body’s contour and enhancing overall shape.

Boosted Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem

Undergoing a Mommy Makeover can significantly boost a woman’s
self-confidence and self-esteem. The changes in body shape and size post-pregnancy can affect how a woman views herself. By targeting
these specific areas of concern, the procedure enhances women’s
comfort and confidence in their own skin, thereby positively influencing their overall quality of life.

Improved Comfort and Lifestyle

Physical discomfort and limitations in clothing choices are common post-pregnancy issues. A Mommy Makeover can alleviate physical discomfort caused by excess skin or poorly proportioned body areas. Additionally,
it can expand clothing options, allowing women to wear a broader range
of styles comfortably.

Long-Lasting Results

While diet and exercise are crucial for a healthy lifestyle, they might
not always address the loose skin and stretched muscles post-pregnancy. The Mommy Makeover offers more permanent solutions to these issues. With proper maintenance, including a healthy lifestyle, the results
of the makeover can be long-lasting.

Emotional and Psychological Benefits

The emotional and psychological impact of feeling good about one’s body should not be underestimated. The Mommy Makeover can lead to improved mental health, including reduced anxiety and depression related to body image.

Mommy Makeover Recovery Journey

A mommy makeover is considered an extensive surgical procedure and, in many cases, will require a lot of rest and help for a loved one. The surgery is performed under deep sedation in our accredited surgical facility in our Scottsdale, AZ office, and on average,
it takes about 6 hours or longer. Many women experience a gradual recovery process.
In the initial weeks, walking upright may be challenging, and it’s important for patients to pace themselves during early recovery. The time it takes for final results to emerge varies based on the procedures performed, ranging from 6 months to a year. Generally, patients can resume their normal routines within about 3 weeks, but they should refrain from exercise and lifting for at least 6-8 weeks post-surgery. Here’s a detailed recovery timeline for a Mommy Makeover, broken down into stages:

Day 1 to Week 1: Immediate Post-Operative Period

In the first week following a Mommy Makeover, immediate post-operative care is crucial. Patients typically experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising, which are managed with prescribed pain medication. Rest is paramount during the recovery period, with a gradual increase in mobility encouraged. Short, gentle walks are recommended to promote circulation, but overexertion should be avoided. Wound care instructions provided by the surgeon should be followed meticulously.

During weeks 1 to 3, patients usually see a gradual reduction in swelling and discomfort. This period may also involve the removal of sutures or drains, as advised by the surgeon. Patients can slowly start resuming light daily activities but should continue to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting. It’s essential to listen to the body and not rush the healing process.

By weeks 4 to 6, patients typically observe a significant reduction in swelling and bruising. This improvement may allow many to comfortably resume work, as long as it doesn’t involve strenuous physical effort. As the healing progresses, patients often feel more like their usual selves. However, it remains crucial to exercise caution with physical activities and adhere to the surgeon’s recommendations.

In weeks 7 to 12, patients can gradually return to more regular activities. Light exercise may be resumed, but only as per the surgeon’s advice. Most of the major swelling should have subsided, and scars will begin to fade, although they will continue to heal and mature.

Between 3 and 6 months post-surgery, patients typically begin to notice the ultimate outcomes of their Mommy Makeover. During this period, swelling diminishes, and scars progressively heal and become less noticeable. Maintaining regular check-ins with the surgeon throughout this phase is essential to track progress and confirm that healing is proceeding as expected.

Six months post-procedure, patients usually see the complete effects of their Mommy Makeover. By this time, the swelling has fully subsided, and the scars have markedly healed. To preserve these results, patients need to maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep up with any suggested follow-up visits with our surgeon.

Stretch marks and scars after a Mommy Makeover

Stretch marks may be reduced when the excess skin is removed,
and the tightening of skin and underlying tissues often makes these marks
less noticeable. Additionally, any remaining stretch marks might become less prominent post-surgery through skin rejuvenation treatments like laser
therapy and chemical peels.

Scars after a mommy makeover. While the procedure creates a beautiful
new shape and figure for a woman, it does involve some scarring, which is most commonly associated with breast lift and tummy tuck procedures. Dr. Scottsdale® improved his scar techniques during his military training, and he will make every effort possible to create clean incisions and take extra care to reduce scarring
as much as possible. Scars resulting from this surgery are typically positioned
so they can be easily hidden by swimsuits or underwear.

Mommy Makeover FAQs

A traditional mommy makeover entails a tummy tuck and breast surgery. In our office, our mommy makeovers are fully custom to the patient’s goals and needs. We offer a combination of plastic surgery to address physical changes that occur during pregnancy. Our most common mommy makeover procedure combinations are liposuction, no drain tummy tuck, breast lift with implants, and Safer Brazilian Butt Lift.
Before planning on having a mommy makeover, you should ask yourself a few questions: are you planning on having more children? When did you have your last baby? If you’re considering more children in the future, it’s recommended to undergo a Mommy Makeover only after you’ve finished your family planning to ensure the lasting effectiveness of the procedure. The reasons are that a mommy makeover is a financial investment in you and your body, and the results will be altered by another pregnancy. If you are not planning on having any more children, then it’s the right time to get surgery. You need to wait at least 6 months after being done breastfeeding to be eligible to have a mommy makeover.

Recovery for Mommy Makeover patients differs individually, depending on each person’s body, pain tolerance, and the specific surgeries they have undergone. Recovery is a slow process, and it can be hard to walk upright in the first several weeks. Usually, the patients can go back to a normal routine in an average of 2 to 3 weeks, but exercising and lifting are not recommended until at least 6-8 weeks after surgery. It may take from 6 months up to a full year for the complete results of the Mommy Makeover procedure to become visible.

Stretch marks may be minimized during tummy tuck when the excess skin is removed, depending on their placement. Remaining stretch marks might be minimized after surgery.

Although a Mommy Makeover can beautifully reshape a woman’s figure, it does involve some scarring, particularly with procedures like breast lifts and tummy tucks. The surgeon is dedicated to making precise, clean incisions and takes significant care to minimize scarring as much as possible. Scars resulting from the surgery are typically positioned so they can be easily hidden by undergarments or swimsuits.

There’s no specific ‘best age’ for a Mommy Makeover. The right time depends more on your health, family plans, and how long it’s been since your last pregnancy. Your body must fully recover from childbirth before undergoing surgery.

A tummy tuck, frequently included in a Mommy Makeover, can either remove or significantly improve the appearance of C-section scars. The success of this depends mainly on the scar’s location and size. During a tummy tuck, excess skin is removed, and the abdominal area is tightened. If your C-section scar is located within the scope of the skin being excised, it can be completely removed. However, if the scar is outside this area, its appearance may improve as the skin is stretched and repositioned.
After a Mommy Makeover, it’s crucial to allow your body enough time to heal before resuming exercise. It’s usually recommended to engage in light walking shortly after surgery, as this helps to stimulate circulation and aid in the healing process. However, more strenuous activities and intense workouts should be avoided for at least 4-6 weeks or as specifically advised by your surgeon. The exact time frame can depend on which procedures have been performed and how fast the individual is healing. It’s essential to start with low-impact exercises and gradually increase the intensity under the guidance of your surgeon. Listening to your body and not rushing into intense workouts is vital to ensuring a smooth and safe recovery.
