About Lipedema Surgery Banner

What Is Lipedema
Surgery?

Lipedema surgery removes excess fat tissue from the legs to treat lipedema, a condition causing abnormal fat accumulation. Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin perform this procedure under local anesthesia with deep sedation to minimize side effects and achieve excellent results. Depending on the amount of fat removal needed, the operation can last 2 to 6 hours. Lipedema surgery is often called liposuction for lipedema.

Our Techniques for Lipedema Surgery

Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin use ultrasonic-assisted liposuction with VASER technology to address lipedema symptoms. This advanced body contouring approach is highly effective and safer than alternative methods. During VASER liposuction, the surgeon inserts a probe that emits ultrasonic energy under the skin to break apart and liquefy fat cells. This device preserves surrounding tissues, like nerves and blood vessels, making the procedure safer. The liquefied fat cells are then suctioned out.

VASER allows more precise fat removal and body sculpting than traditional liposuction methods. It helps plastic surgeons perform large-volume fat extraction during lipedema surgery while minimizing blood loss. Patients experience less bruising and swelling after this procedure.

Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin also perform power-assisted liposuction (PAL) with MicroAire technology. It involves using a cannula with a mechanized vibrating tip to break up and remove fat. The cannula moves rapidly back and forth, allowing fat extraction with more precision and less effort than traditional liposuction methods. PAL can address each treatment site properly, helping patients reduce the excess tissue caused by lipedema.

Consultation & Preparation For Lipedema Surgery Banner

Consultation & Preparation for Lipedema Surgery

Preparation for lipedema surgery begins with a consultation with Dr. Mata or Dr. Benjamin to discuss the details of the procedure and expected results. The surgeon evaluates the patient to determine their eligibility for the operation based on the severity of their condition and other health factors.
If deemed a good candidate, the patient undergoes lab tests and receives medical clearances to ensure safety. Arrangements are made for post-operative assistance and recovery since mobility will be impacted in the initial healing phase. The surgeon also sets realistic expectations and explains that multiple procedures may be undertaken over time for optimal outcomes. To achieve the best results, patients must be committed to a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Lipedema Surgery Procedure

Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin perform lipedema surgery under deep sedation anesthesia. This involves providing intravenous medications to cause a state of reduced consciousness and profound relaxation. The patient is not asleep and feels no pain. Sedation medicine keeps them completely calm and relaxed. Vital signs are monitored throughout the procedure.
A tumescent solution consisting of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine is injected into the target areas. These medications provide local anesthesia and blood vessel constriction. They minimize bleeding, allow us to prevent pain, and help achieve maximum comfort.
Small incisions of a few millimeters each are made in the surgical sites. These openings allow for the insertion of fat-dislodging devices and cannulas. The incisions are hidden to minimize scarring as much as possible. They are very tiny and made in a few seconds.
VASER liposuction uses ultrasound energy to break up and liquefy fat before removal. A probe emitting high-frequency acoustic waves is inserted through the incisions to treat the unwanted tissue. After this procedure, Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin can remove fat with less mechanical force.
The next step is to use power-assisted liposuction, which includes a cannula with a vibrating back-and-forth motion to dislodge excess tissue. This allows the surgery to be performed more precisely and efficiently than traditional manual liposuction. The broken fat tissue is suctioned out through the cannula.
After all procedures, the surgeon closes the incisions with dissolvable sutures. Bandages are also applied to promote healing and recovery.

Add-On Procedure
Renuvion Skin Tightening

Lipedema patients often struggle with loose skin after undergoing liposuction. Renuvion skin tightening has emerged as a promising technique to address this issue. It uses a combination of radiofrequency energy and helium gas (J-Plasma) to heat the dermal layer of the skin, stimulating new collagen production. This treatment tightens loose tissues, making them look smoother and more youthful. When performed as an add-on procedure immediately after lipedema surgery, Renuvion allows Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin to remove fat and tighten the skin in a single operation. Patients benefit from less anesthesia time, fewer operations, and better cosmetic outcomes.

Recovery After Lipedema Surgery

After lipedema surgery, patients experience pain and swelling around the areas that were operated on. They need to rest with their legs elevated to reduce inflammation. Patients should take any prescribed medications as directed by Dr. Mata or Dr. Benjamin. Ice packs may also help alleviate pain and inflammation. People usually need assistance standing up and walking on the first day.
Patients should continue resting with their legs elevated, using ice packs, and taking medications for pain and swelling during this period. Light activity, such as short walks, is encouraged to help prevent blood clots, but strenuous movements must be avoided. Patients may experience bruising, numbness, and mild drainage from incisions. We recommend following all instructions from our surgical team when caring for dressings or drains. Patients should also wear compression garments to help reduce inflammation.
Over the next few weeks, the swelling continues to decrease, and patients regain mobility and strength. Any stitches (if present) are removed around this time. Patients can gradually become more active by increasing walking distances. Compression garments are still worn to control inflammation. Patients may start light scar massage and schedule lymphatic drainage sessions.
For several months after lipedema surgery, patients continue their recovery with lymphatic self-massages and specialized exercises to reduce swelling and hardness. Scars continue healing and fade over time. Most patients see significant improvements in mobility and the appearance of their legs.

BENEFITS OF Lipedema Surgery

Reduced Pain and Discomfort

Liposuction can help reduce the pain and discomfort that is commonly associated with lipedema. By removing the abnormal fat tissue, this procedure alleviates the pressure and inflammation that cause aches. Many patients report significant pain relief after surgery.

Improved Mobility

The removal of excess fat deposits enables better mobility. Patients find it easier to complete day-to-day physical activities with less restrictive tissue. Simple movements, like walking, bending over, or going up and down stairs, become less challenging after liposuction.

Better Body Contour and Shape

Surgery dramatically alters body shape and contour in areas impacted by lipedema. Removing disproportionate fat deposits creates a more balanced, proportionate figure. Patients are usually pleased with their aesthetic improvements, and their clothing fits more comfortably.

Decreased Risk of Secondary Conditions

Lipedema surgery helps decrease the risk of developing secondary conditions, such as joint problems, immobility, and lymphedema. Eliminating heavy fat tissue minimizes the strain on nearby joints and improves overall health.
