An Introduction

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the upper arm to restore a firmer, more youthful contour. It's one of the most requested procedures after major weight loss and among patients whose upper-arm skin has lost elasticity with age. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Carlos Mata (Dr. Scottsdale®) tailors every arm lift to the individual — from a short-scar mini-lift to a full brachioplasty — frequently pairing it with liposuction for the smoothest possible result.

01
The Procedure

What is an Arm Lift?

Brachioplasty addresses the loose, hanging skin along the underside of the upper arm — sometimes called “bat wings.” Dr. Mata removes the excess skin and, where needed, the underlying fat, then re-drapes the remaining skin to a tighter contour from the elbow to the armpit.

For patients with good skin tone but stubborn fat, liposuction alone may be enough. For those with significant skin laxity — especially after weight loss — skin excision is the only way to achieve a lasting result, because skin that has lost its elasticity will not retract on its own.

02
Options

Types of Arm Lift

Mini Arm Lift — A short incision hidden in the armpit, for patients with mild laxity concentrated near the upper arm.

Full Brachioplasty — An incision running from the armpit to the elbow along the inner arm, for significant skin excess. The scar is positioned to sit on the inner arm where it is least visible.

Extended Arm Lift — Extends onto the side of the chest for patients after massive weight loss with skin laxity beyond the arm itself.

Liposuction-Assisted — Liposuction combined with skin tightening for a refined, sculpted contour where both fat and modest skin excess are present.

What Happens

The Procedure Step-by-Step

Anesthesia — Performed under general anesthesia in our accredited in-house Scottsdale surgical suite.

Incision — Placed along the inner arm where it is least conspicuous; length is matched to the amount of skin removed.

Contouring — Excess skin is excised and any localized fat addressed with liposuction. The remaining skin is smoothed and tightened.

Closure — Layered, tension-distributing sutures close the incision to support healing and a fine final scar.

Candidacy

Is This Right For You?

You may be a candidate if...
  • Loose or sagging skin on the upper arms
  • Significant skin laxity following major weight loss
  • Stable weight maintained for several months
  • Good general health and non-smoking (or willing to quit)
  • Realistic expectations about scar placement on the inner arm
This may not be right if...
  • Active significant weight fluctuation
  • Unable to accept the trade-off of a scar for tighter contour

Candidacy is ultimately a conversation. Dr. Mata will determine the right path at consultation.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions

01Where will the scar be?+

The incision runs along the inner arm, positioned so the scar faces inward and is hidden when your arms rest at your sides. Scars fade significantly over the first year.

02Can I just get liposuction instead?+

If you have good skin elasticity and the concern is fat, liposuction alone may suffice. But once skin has lost elasticity — common after weight loss or with age — skin must be removed to achieve a lasting result.

03How long do results last?+

Results are long-lasting as long as your weight stays stable. Significant weight gain or loss afterward can affect the contour.

04Can an arm lift be combined with other procedures?+

Yes — it's commonly combined with a tummy tuck, breast procedure, or other body contouring as part of a post-weight-loss or mommy makeover plan, in a single recovery period.
