What is Labiaplasty?

Vaginal rejuvenation surgery, also known medically as labiaplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that restores the shape of the inner vaginal lips (labia minora). Many women are born with asymmetrical lips or experience hanging skin in this area after pregnancy or significant weight loss.
However, labiaplasty is not just about cosmetic appearance. This surgery relieves chronic irritation, infections, or discomfort during sexual intercourse caused by enlarged vaginal lips. Labiaplasty can also reduce negative sensations when wearing tight undergarments or engaging in sports.
Women who are unhappy with their labia should not feel nervous or afraid to turn
to our compassionate doctors. Labiaplasty is one of the fastest-growing cosmetic surgeries in the United States today. It provides many benefits and can be performed with maximum comfort for the patient.

Labiaplasty Techniques

Natural Results Plastic Surgery uses the latest reshaping techniques so that the labia are reduced and the nerves are protected in the process. We always strive to preserve the natural contour, improve color, and create visually appealing results with minimal to no scarring. Our board-certified plastic surgeon will use one of the following techniques:

TRIM TECHNIQUE

This technique is very common in labiaplasty. During the operation, the surgeon trims excess skin from the inner labia edges. The amount of tissue removed depends on the patient’s anatomy and aesthetic goals. The surgeon may use medical scissors, a scalpel, or a laser. After removing the excess tissue, the inner vaginal lips become aligned with the outer ones. The trim technique does not preserve the natural borders of labia minora but eliminates the dark pigmentation on the edges.

WEDGE TECHNIQUE

This approach involves removing a pie-shaped wedge of tissue from the thickest part of the labia minora. The surgeon determines the desired size for the new contours and cuts away a V-shaped wedge from the enlarged vaginal lips. This technique is more complex and invasive than a simple trim. However, it preserves the natural borders and sensation. After reshaping, the surgeon closes the reaming edges with dissolvable deep sutures. The wedge method allows Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin to reduce enlarged labia significantly. Recovery is longer than after the trim technique.

Consultation & Preparation for Labiaplasty

During the initial consultation, the patient’s medical history is reviewed, and a physical examination of the genital area is performed to assess the anatomy and determine if the person is a good candidate for surgery. Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin also explain all the details regarding the operation, such as the labiaplasty technique used, whether any additional procedures will take place simultaneously, and what type of anesthesia will be provided. Risks and complications associated with labiaplasty are also discussed.

Labiaplasty:
Surgical Procedure

Anesthesia

Labiaplasty is typically performed under general or local anesthesia with sedation to keep the patient comfortable. Our anesthesiologist provides medication at the start of the operation to induce relaxation and block any pain or discomfort.

The most common techniques we use to perform labiaplasty are wedge resection and trimming:

  • Wedge resection: Our doctor uses fine medical tools to reshape the inner folds of the labia. In the process, a clean V-shaped wedge is made in the vaginal lips and then removed to reduce their size. The surgeon carefully reshapes the labia to meet the patient’s aesthetic goals.

  • Trimming: Using this technique, the doctor removes tissues from the outer edges of the labia minora, making it shorter and more aligned with the labia majora. Care is taken to preserve nerves and sensation in the inner vaginal lips.

After reshaping, the surgeon closes any open incisions with dissolvable sutures. This allows the wounds to heal without the need to remove stitches later. To promote recovery, Steri-Strips or gauze may be applied over the closed incisions.

CLITORAL HOOD REDUCTION

This procedure decreases the size of the clitoral hood, which is the fold of skin surrounding and protecting the clitoris. The doctor removes excess skin from the hood to increase exposure and sensation in that area. A small incision is made along the edge of the hood and tissue is excised before closing the cut with dissolvable sutures. This is often done as part of a labiaplasty.

RESHAPING OF LABIA MAJORA

The labia majora are the outer fatty folds of the vulva. Our surgeon can alter their size or shape to reduce excess tissue. An incision is made along the back edge of the labia majora, and loose skin is removed. The remaining tissue is pulled tight and stitched closed. Fat grafting is sometimes used to plump up the labia majora. This procedure rejuvenates the outer vaginal lips and can be performed alongside labiaplasty.

Recovery After
Labiaplasty

Recovery time varies depending on the technique used and the amount
of tissue removed. Immediately after this plastic surgery procedure, patients can expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which may last a few weeks. Wound care is important during recovery to prevent infection while incisions heal. This involves keeping surgical areas clean and dry.

Patients are advised to avoid any vigorous activity or sexual intercourse
for 4-6 weeks after the operation. Complete healing can take several months. We recommend attending all follow-up appointments to help
us monitor recovery progress and address any complications.
Patients may experience temporary numbness or changes in sensitivity, which could last a few months after surgery as the swelling goes down.
With proper aftercare and wound management, these symptoms
disappear, giving way to all sensations.

AFTER PREGNANCY

In most cases, it is recommended that labiaplasty candidates wait until after all pregnancies are complete. However, if having an enlarged labia is bothersome and causes physical symptoms and emotional hardship, then this surgery may be performed before planned childbearing. If the results of the operation are compromised due to pregnancy, we can correct these issues with an additional labiaplasty.

Benefits of Labiaplasty

IMPROVED
COMFORT

Many women experience physical discomfort from enlarged labia getting pulled, twisted, or irritated during daily activities. Surgery can reshape and reduce the excess tissue to prevent these negative sensations. Many patients report relief from chronic pain or discomfort after undergoing labiaplasty.

BETTER SEXUAL
INTERCOURSE

Labia reduction surgery improves sexual intercourse. This is because the excess labial tissue that caused discomfort is removed. The clitoral region can also be made more sensitive so the intimate life becomes better.

OUTPATIENT
PROCEDURE

Labiaplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. This means that women may go home the same day after their surgery. Recovery becomes easier for many patients, as they can heal more comfortably instead of staying overnight at a hospital or medical facility.

Labiaplasty FAQs

Obgyn or Cosmetic Surgeon?

When researching the aesthetic surgery market, most patients will find that a large majority of cosmetic surgeons offer labiaplasty. While many OBGYNs are capable of performing labia rejuvenation, the procedure is most often considered cosmetic. An OBGYN will be able to surgically remove any excess that exists within the labia; however, a cosmetic surgeon will consider the aesthetics as well. This ensures that scarring is minimal and that color, contour, and symmetry look and feel natural.
As with any surgery, there may be numbness in the vaginal area after the procedure is completed. This is temporary as the skin and vaginal lips heal. In regards to sensitivity, it is important to understand that labia rejuvenation affects, for the most part, the vaginal lips only. Sensitivity is served by the clitoris. A skilled cosmetic surgeon who specializes in labiaplasty will work around this area so that a loss of sensitivity does not occur.
Labiaplasty, when performed by a skilled surgeon, will only improve sexual intercourse. In many cases, this is because the excess skin and tissue that may have gotten in the way during sex before will now be removed. The clitoral region will be protected, and the sensory nerves will be preserved so that sexual intercourse is not impacted in a negative way.
In most cases, it is recommended that women wait to have labia rejuvenation until after all pregnancies are complete. However, if having enlarged labia is bothersome and causes physical symptoms and emotional hardship, then this surgery can most definitely be performed before a planned pregnancy. If the results of the surgery are compromised due to a post-surgical pregnancy, a second surgery may be discussed.
