What Is Knee Lift?

A knee lift is a cosmetic procedure that makes the knees look more youthful and aesthetically pleasing. During the surgery, excess skin and fat deposits in that area are removed to create a smoother, tighter, and more toned appearance. A knee lift typically takes 1-2 hours under local anesthesia and involves making small incisions to reshape the tissues. This surgery is an excellent option for people who want to address wrinkled skin, “baggy knees,” and other signs of aging.

Consultation & Preparation for Knee Lift

Preparation is essential before a knee lift. Each patient should schedule a consultation with Dr. Mata or Dr. Benjamin to discuss their goals and expectations, medical history, medications, and the specifics of the procedure. Our surgeons evaluate the knee joint, fat deposits, skin elasticity, and overall health to determine if the candidate is eligible for this operation.
Several weeks before the procedure, the patient should discontinue blood-thinning medications, arrange transportation, and prepare a recovery space at home. On the day of surgery, final consent forms are signed, vital signs are checked, and the treatment area is marked.

Knee Lift: Surgical
Procedure Step by Step

Local Anesthesia

The surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area being operated on. The surgeon injects the numbing medication into the area around the knees to block pain signals during the procedure.
Incisions are made above the knee and/or in the creases around the knee joint. The incisions are placed strategically to minimize scarring and hide it in natural folds.
The surgeon removes excess sagging skin and fat from the knees. Using a scalpel, special scissors, and other instruments, he eliminates skin laxity, smoothes out wrinkles, and tightens loose tissue. As a result, patients get a more youthful, toned appearance.
Once the desired amount of tissue is removed, the surgeon closes the incisions with stitches. In some cases, he may use dissolvable sutures so that no additional removal is required. Steri-Strips or bandages are also applied to protect the closed incisions as they heal.

Alternative Treatments

Depending on the level of sagging and the patient’s goals and expectations, other treatments may be selected:

Magic Tight® via Accutite

Our less invasive procedure, Magic Tight® via Accutite can be performed under local anesthesia. Accutite is a small skin tightening device that uses a controlled and uniform bipolar radiofrequency energy to reduce sagging. Our board-certified plastic surgeon creates one or two tiny incisions in each knee to insert a probe and lift the skin without damaging tissues. Accutite is excellent for patients with mild sagging.

Recovery After Knee Lift

First 24 Hours

We recommend resting with the legs slightly elevated during the first day after a knee lift. Patients should not bend their knees more than 90 degrees. They can use ice packs for 20 minutes a few times throughout the day to reduce swelling, bruising, and other symptoms. Walking should be kept to a minimum, with assistance as needed.
In the first week, swelling and bruising around the knee reach their peak before starting to decrease. Patients should use compression bandages and ice to minimize these symptoms. Incisions must be kept clean and dry. Light activity can be resumed while avoiding strain on the knees. Physical therapy often begins about 7 days after surgery.
Over the next few weeks, the swelling becomes much less noticeable, and bruising changes color from dark blue to various shades of yellow before fading. Patients should gradually increase their physical activity under the guidance of a therapist or by following our recommendations. This includes stretches, muscle strengthening, and low-impact exercise. Most people can return to work and normal daily activities (besides high-impact exercise) within 10-14 days of recovery. The full effects of the knee lift are visible after 3-4 months.

Caring for Scars

The knee incisions will be noticeable initially but fade with time. The quality of scarring depends on the patient’s skin and aftercare routine. We offer different procedures to improve the scars and ensure excellent results. Patients can learn about them by reading this short guide.

Better Clothing Fit

As we age, the skin around the knees can sag and cause clothing to fit poorly. Cosmetic surgery removes this excess tissue, allowing pants, skirts, shorts, and other garments to fit and drape more nicely over the knees. Patients often feel that their wardrobe choices expand thanks to better contours.
