What Is
Arm Liposuction?

Arm liposuction is a cosmetic surgery that removes excess fat from the upper arm region through small incisions in the skin. This targeted technique uses a thin, hollow tube (called a cannula) to suction out unwanted fat cells from the area between the armpit and elbow. Many people find it challenging to eliminate this stubborn tissue through diet and exercise alone. Arm liposuction can be performed independently or with other body contouring procedures. The surgery typically takes 1-3 hours to complete, depending on how much fat is removed and whether it is performed on one or both arms.

Tumescent liposuction is considered the gold standard and most common technique today. It involves injecting a special solution into the treatment area before fat removal. This fluid, which contains saline, lidocaine (a local anesthetic), and epinephrine (to constrict blood vessels), causes the fat layer to become swollen and firm. The tumescent technique reduces blood loss during surgery and effectively controls pain. To achieve excellent results, Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin combine this method with the latest liposuction technology.
Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) involves a specialized cannula that rapidly vibrates back and forth to break up fat cells, making them easier to remove. This mechanical movement helps Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin extract fat with less physical effort, reducing potential trauma to the surrounding tissues. The vibrating motion can be particularly effective in fibrous areas or during secondary liposuction procedures. This technique typically results in less bruising and a faster recovery time.
Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL) employs high-frequency sound waves to liquefy fatty tissue before it is suctioned from the body. The ultrasonic energy targets fat cells specifically while preserving the surrounding nerves and blood vessels. This technique can be particularly beneficial due to enhanced skin retraction and is often chosen for areas requiring more precise sculpting.

Our Liposuction Techniques

Preparation for Arm Liposuction

The first step in arm liposuction is a comprehensive medical consultation. Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin evaluate the patient’s health, disease history, and aesthetic goals. Blood tests and other necessary medical examinations are conducted to ensure the individual is a suitable candidate for the surgical procedure. Our doctors also discuss potential risks and recovery time while documenting the patient’s current medications and supplements.
In the weeks before surgery, we recommend ceasing smoking and avoiding blood-thinning drugs, such as aspirin. Proper hydration and a balanced diet are essential during this period. Patients should also arrange transportation home after surgery and have someone help them around the house for several days. Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin typically take photographs and measurements of the arms for before-and-after documentation and surgical planning.

Arm Liposuction Procedure

Pre-Operative Marking

Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin carefully mark the patient’s arms, identifying areas of excess fat deposits and ensuring symmetry. These guidelines help achieve optimal contours.

Anesthesia

Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin always perform arm liposuction surgery under deep sedation to ensure the patient is pain-free and comfortable. This approach helps us avoid the risks of general anesthesia.

Incision Placement

Our surgeons make several small incisions (less than 0.2 inches long) strategically placed in natural skin folds or inconspicuous arm areas. Common locations include the elbow crease and near the armpit. These tiny incisions serve as access points for the infiltration and liposuction cannulas.

Tumescent Fluid Infiltration

A solution containing saline, lidocaine (a local anesthetic), and epinephrine (to constrict blood vessels) is injected into the treatment zone through the small incisions. This fluid numbs the area, reduces bleeding, and makes fat removal easier. As a result, the tissue becomes swollen and firm (“tumescent”).

Liposuction Technique

Using a cannula connected to a vacuum device, our surgeons carefully remove excess fat through a back-and-forth motion. Different sizes and types of devices may be used depending on the area being treated. Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin maintain smooth, natural-looking contours and ensure symmetry between both arms. They use the following technologies:
  • VASER for ultrasonic-assisted liposuction
  • MicroAire PAL for power-assisted liposuction

Final Contouring

Once the desired amount of fat is removed, our surgeons perform final sculpting to ensure smooth contours. This involves carefully moving the cannula through the treated areas to check for evenness and symmetry. Additional fat may be removed or redistributed as needed.

Closure

The small incisions are typically closed with a single suture or left open to allow drainage. Because they are so small, they usually heal with minimal scarring. Compression garments are applied before the patient leaves the operating room.

Add-On Procedures

Renuvion Skin Tightening

Renuvion is a minimally invasive procedure that uses cold plasma energy (J-Plasma) to tighten loose skin. The treatment combines helium gas with radiofrequency energy to contract the fibro-septal network under the surface. Renuvion is beneficial for patients with sagging skin left after liposuction.

Arm Lift Surgery

This surgical procedure removes excess skin from the upper arms (“bat wings”). Our surgeons make an incision along the inner or back of the arm, remove loose tissue, and tighten the remaining skin to create a more contoured appearance. Arm lift procedures are often performed 4-6 months after liposuction.
During the initial 24 hours after arm liposuction, patients experience swelling, bruising, and mild to moderate discomfort. The treated areas are covered with compression garments to minimize symptoms and support the healing tissues. Small drainage tubes may be placed to prevent fluid accumulation. Pain medication prescribed by Dr. Mata and Benjamin helps manage any discomfort. Patients should rest with their arms elevated above heart level and avoid unnecessary movements.
The first week is crucial for proper healing. Compression garments must be worn continuously, except when showering. Bruising and swelling peak during this time and begin to subside toward the end of the week. Patients can return to light desk work after 7-10 days. However, they should avoid lifting anything heavy or engaging in strenuous activities. Some numbness and tingling sensations are expected during this period. Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation.
Most of the swelling and bruising subside by the end of this period, though some mild symptoms may persist. Patients can gradually return to normal activities but should continue wearing compression garments as directed by our surgeons. Any residual numbness continues to improve, and the final contours of the arms begin to become visible. However, complete healing may take several months.
