Buccal Fat Removal Surgery: Step by Step

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is used to numb the inside of the mouth. This is done by injecting lidocaine into the buccal mucosa (soft tissue lining), where the incisions will be made. The anesthetic helps minimize discomfort during the procedure.

Incisions

Small incisions (about 0.3 inches wide) are made inside the mouth near the back teeth (molars). These openings provide access to the buccal fat pads.

Removal of Fat

Is There Any Downtime With This Procedure?

Week 2

Weeks 3-4

Most bruising fades within 3-4 weeks. The swelling also decreases significantly, revealing slimmer facial contours. Patients typically feel comfortable returning to their routine. Some mild residual symptoms might last for several months.

Months Later

While the large buccal fat pads are permanently reduced, some patients may experience fat regrowth within the first year after surgery. However, this additional tissue is minimal and does not affect facial features.

When Will I Start Seeing Results?

You will start seeing results within one to two weeks after the procedure is completed and once the swelling begins to subside. For full results, it could take anywhere from two to four months to appreciate the final look. Overall, you can expect to see naturally defined cheeks with a slimmer facial appearance.
