What Is an Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a cosmetic procedure that modifies the shape and structure of the upper and lower eyelids. It involves making incisions along the eyelids to remove or reposition excess fat, muscle, or skin. The goal of this surgery is to improve the appearance of the eye area by getting rid of bagginess, puffiness, drooping skin, or other signs of aging.

Types of Eyelid Surgery

Types of Eyelid Surgery: Upper Eyelid Surgery Banner

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the upper lids. During this operation, incisions are made in the natural creases of the upper eyelids to access the underlying muscle and fat. The surgeon then eliminates unwanted tissue to smooth the appearance of that area. This operation can help to improve drooping upper eyelids or skin hanging over the eyelashes.
It creates a more youthful and rested look in the eyes and face.

Types of Eyelid Surgery: Lower Eyelid Surgery Banner

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery reduces bagginess, wrinkles, and dark circles under the eyes. During this blepharoplasty, the surgeon makes tiny incisions just below the lower lash lines or inside the lower eyelid. Unwanted fat is removed or redistributed, and excess skin is trimmed away. The surgeon may also reposition or tighten underlying muscle and tendon tissues. This procedure reduces puffy lower eyelids and improves the transition between the eyelids and the cheek. It creates a smoother appearance around the eyes.

Consultation & Preparation for Eyelid Surgery

Preparation for eyelid surgery begins with a consultation. During this meeting, we discuss the goals and expected outcomes of the operation to ensure that everything is clear. Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin evaluate the patient’s eyelids and facial features, take measurements, and recommend a customized treatment plan. They also review medical history and current medications to determine potential risks and whether the person is a good candidate.

If cleared or surgery, the patient receives preoperative instructions, such as temporarily stopping certain medications that increase bleeding risk, arranging transportation, and stocking up on cold compresses, gauze, eye lubricant, and other supplies for post-surgery wound care. Some additional tasks include getting lab tests done, avoiding alcohol and tobacco products, and planning to take at least 1-2 weeks off from work or strenuous activities to allow proper healing. Clear communication between patient and surgeon leading up to the operation date is vital for optimal preparation.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure Banner

Eyelid Surgery Procedure

STEP 1: Anesthesia

Cosmetic eyelid surgery can be performed under different types of anesthesia. For the operation on the upper eyelid alone, we use local anesthesia while the patient remains awake. If the procedure involves both upper and lower eyelids, the surgeon will choose deep sedation to maximize comfort. Under deep sedation, the patient sleeps through the procedure and breathes on their own.
The surgeon makes small incisions along the natural creases and lines of the eyelid to limit visible scarring. For upper blepharoplasty, the opening is made in the fold of the upper lid, just below the lower edge of the brow. For lower blepharoplasty, the incision is made just below the lower lash line or inside the lower eyelid.
Through the small openings, the surgeon removes unwanted skin, muscle (sometimes), and underlying fatty tissue. This procedure helps to eliminate sagging skin or hooding of the eyelids. Trimming muscle and fat reduces bulges and puffiness. The amount removed depends on the patient’s needs and goals.
After removing the tissue, the surgeon closes the incisions with fine sutures. Special care is taken to do this neatly so that scarring is minimized. Steri-Strips may be used temporarily to support the healing process.

Add-On Procedure

Brow Lift

A brow lift can be a useful additional procedure for eyelid surgery. As people age, their brows can drop down over the eyes, creating a tired or ….

grumpy appearance. During a blepharoplasty, excess skin and fat are removed from the upper and lower eyelids to rejuvenate the eyes. However, simply addressing these areas may not fully brighten the face if heavy brow tissue is still present. Therefore, adding a brow lift can complement eyelid rejuvenation by elevating the brow to a more youthful, arched position

Fat Repositioning
(Grafting)

Fat grafting may also enhance the aesthetic results. During this procedure, fat harvested from elsewhere in the patient’s body is carefully …..

injected into the eyelids and surrounding areas to restore volume and a youthful contour that was lost due to aging. Fat is a natural-looking, smooth, and long-lasting filler. When performed skillfully, grafting can address hollowness, wrinkles, and a gaunt appearance around the eyes. Though it is a complex procedure, the long-term benefits make fat grafting an excellent complement to blepharoplasty.

Canthoplasty
and/or Canthopexy

Canthoplasty and canthopexy are often performed in conjunction with eyelid surgery. A canthoplasty involves modifying the shape and position of the ..

lateral canthus (the outer corner of the eye where the upper and lower eyelids meet). This procedure can be done to lengthen or shorten the eye fissure, to correct drooping of the lateral canthus, or to achieve better symmetry between the two eyes. A canthopexy also addresses the lateral canthus but involves stabilizing and providing support to the outer corner of the eye using sutures that anchor it to bone or tissue. These adjunct procedures are often necessary to achieve optimal aesthetic results from blepharoplasty and to ensure the functional integrity of the eyelids after surgery.

Recovery After Eyelid Surgery

The healing process after an eyelid lift involves some swelling and bruising around the eyes that gradually resolves over 1-2 weeks. Vision may be blurry at first, but will improve as the eyes adjust. Cold compresses can provide some relief. With proper self-care, all discomfort will subside, and the eyes will look rejuvenated.

Our surgeon may prescribe pain medication to make the healing more comfortable. Most patients feel well enough to return to work or normal routines within a week. However, healing continues over the entire month after the operation. It is crucial
to take time to rest and allow the body to mend from surgical procedures.

Candidates for Eyelid Surgery

When considering eyelid surgery, Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin must determine if a patient is a good candidate. Ideally, the person should exhibit certain characteristics that make them more likely to achieve optimal results. We take into account both the physical traits of the eyelids and eyes as well as the patient’s overall health profile. Here are the main criteria:
Candidates for Eyelid Surgery Banner

Excess Upper Eyelid Skin

Patients with too much skin hanging over the eyelashes are good candidates for this procedure. The excess skin can obstruct vision and give the eyes a tired, droopy appearance. Blepharoplasty removes the skin and fat in that area to open the eyes and make them look youthful.
Eyelid surgery can also improve under-eye bags or puffiness. The surgeon will sculpt away some fat and excess skin for a more rejuvenated, well-rested appearance.
Some patients have lower eyelids that appear pulled down. This can make them look much older or constantly tired. Blepharoplasty eliminates sagging skin and tightens muscles to lift the lower lids back into a more youthful position.
For patients with one eyelid that droops much lower than the other, eyelid surgery can even out and balance them. Making the eyelids more symmetrical creates better facial symmetry and helps patients look more beautiful.
Candidates must generally be in good health to undergo any type of surgery safely. Those considering eyelid operation should be nonsmokers and free from serious eye infections or conditions. Any medical issues, such as high blood pressure, must be well-controlled. Being in good health allows the body to heal more quickly after surgery. Therefore, patients should discuss their full medical history with Dr. Mata and Dr. Benjamin to determine if they are good candidates and rule out all risks.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Improves Vision

Eyelid surgery can help to improve vision in patients with droopy eyelids (ptosis). This condition obstructs their field of view, which may be highly uncomfortable. By lifting and tightening the eyelid skin, blepharoplasty can open up their sight lines and make
it easier to see without straining.

Enhances Appearance

Eyelid surgery is often performed for facial rejuvenation. Removing excess, sagging skin makes the eyes look more open, refreshed, and youthful. This procedure may also reshape hooded eyelids or puffy bags under the eyes, creating better facial symmetry.

Boosts Confidence

Eyelid surgery can boost self-confidence by improving vision obstructed by droopy eyelids or rejuvenating an aged, tired look. After this procedure, patients may feel more comfortable in social settings and taking photos.

Quick Recovery Time

While individual healing times vary, eyelid surgery
is generally considered a relatively simple operation with minimal downtime. Many patients only require a few days from work and social engagements before they can resume their normal activities with newly improved eyes.

Reduces Eye Strain

By lifting droopy lids that weigh down the patient’s eyes, blepharoplasty helps to reduce chronic eye strain, headaches, and forehead tension caused by overcompensating muscles.

Minimizes Makeup Need

Patients with significant droopiness or wrinkled eyelids often rely on daily makeup to feel more confident. Eyelid surgery can reduce this need for cosmetics and simplify their beauty routine.

Long Lasting Results

Unlike injectable treatments, which require maintenance appointments over time, the effects of eyelid surgery are longer lasting. The functional and aesthetic improvements are relatively permanent.

Cost of Blepharoplasty Scottsdale

The cost of eyelid surgery in Scottsdale ranges from $5,000 to $25,000 on average. This price can vary based on the surgeon’s experience and credentials, as well as the extent of treatment. Simple upper eyelid surgery starts around $5,000, while more complex lower lid procedures with fat repositioning can require more than $15,000.

When budgeting for this operation, patients should consider not only the surgeon’s fee but also the cost of the facility, anesthesia, and any pre- or post-operative care required. Top professionals and state-of-the-art centers in Scottsdale often charge higher prices. However, paying more can reduce risk and lead to better aesthetic results. At Natural Results Plastic Surgery, we maintain the highest standards of quality and safety while offering financing plans to make this transformative procedure accessible for every patient.
