Breast Reduction Before & After
Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) creates smaller, lighter breasts by removing glandular tissue, fat, and skin from large, heavy, sagging breasts. If you choose breast reduction by our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Carlos Mata aka Dr. Scottsdale®, your results may include improved posture, reduced chest discomfort, a slimmer profile, and most importantly, a renewed self-confidence. When you come in for an initial consultation at our office in Scottsdale, AZ, we will ask about all the symptoms, bra indentations, and pain and discomfort your large breasts cause. We will also use our VECTRA® 3D Imaging System to create a 3D image of your breasts so you may envision your results with smaller and healthier breasts.

What is Breast
Reduction Surgery?

Reduction mammaplasty, or commonly known as breast reduction surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure aimed to decrease the size of overly large breasts. Traditional breast reduction surgery is often sought by individuals who experience physical discomfort, such as back and neck pain, skin irritation, and posture problems, due to the size of their breasts. It’s also considered by those who feel self-conscious or face limitations in physical activities because of large, heavy breasts.

Breast Reduction Surgical Techniques

Breast Reduction Surgical Techniques

Traditional breast reduction | breast lift

The most common breast reduction surgery consists of using an incision called “the anchor” or a vertical T. The incision is made around the areola, extends vertically down to the breast crease, and then is followed by another horizontal incision along the direction of the fold. This technique will reposition the areola (nipple) higher, remove the extra breast tissue & skin, and place your breast higher on your chest. Your breasts will be resized, recurved, and smaller. It is important to maintain a good blood supply of the nipple-areola to reduce the risks of discoloration and/or loss of sensation.
The auto-augmentation breast lift/ reduction is similar to a traditional breast lift/reduction. A “T” incision (anchor incision) is made: incision around the areola, then one extending vertically down to the breast crease, and then another one horizontal along the direction of the fold. During the procedure, the excess skin will be removed, and part of the breast tissue will be adjusted if needed. The other part of the breast tissue will be carefully tucked back into the breast and sutured to give an appearance of “implant”. Your breasts will be fuller on the top and will give you better long-term results.

Vaser Lipo & Magic Tight® can be performed on the breast tissue to reduce the size of the breast. This procedure is done on a case-by-case basis, based on your starting point, goals, and expectations. The reduction is minor to moderate and will not correct any sagginess. The goal of Magic Tight® during this procedure is to prevent sagginess from the breast tissue removal by Vaser Lipo. It’s an alternative to a regular breast reduction, the scarring is minimal but only works for breasts that require a little bit of reduction and don’t have sagginess to start with.

Breast Reduction Recovery

At Natural Results AZ in Scottsdale, AZ, we ensure our patients are well-informed about the recovery process following a breast reduction procedure. Recovery is a crucial phase where proper care and precautions are vital for optimal results and comfort. After the surgery, for the first several weeks, we recommend the use of a compression or surgical bra to support and protect the breasts. This helps in reducing swelling and aids in the healing process.

Patients are typically able to return to work within 7 to 10 days post-surgery, depending on the nature of their job and their individual healing process. However, it’s important to avoid strenuous activities like heavy lifting during this period. We advise patients to wait between 6 and 8 weeks before resuming physical activities like exercise, ensuring the body has adequate time to heal.

The results of a breast reduction are usually visible immediately after the surgery, providing immediate relief from physical discomfort and enhancing the breast’s appearance. However, it’s important to note that losing sensation in the nipple and the potential impact on the ability to breastfeed are risks associated with this procedure. These are essential considerations we discuss with our patients during the consultation phase.

Ideal Candidates for a Breast Reduction Procedure

At Natural Results AZ, breast reduction performed by our experienced breast surgeon is tailored to individuals who meet specific criteria, ensuring optimal outcomes and safety. Ideal candidates for this procedure typically exhibit characteristics that include:

Experiencing Physical Discomfort

Individuals who suffer from back, neck, or shoulder pain, skin irritation, or other physical discomforts directly attributable to overly large breasts.

Breast Development Complete

Candidates should be past puberty, with fully developed breasts. This typically excludes adolescents unless they are experiencing severe symptoms.

Good Overall Health

Candidates should be free from severe health conditions that could impair healing or increase surgical risks, such as uncontrolled diabetes or heart disease.

Informed About Breastfeeding

Understanding that the ability to breastfeed post-surgery might be affected, and being comfortable with this possibility.

Stable Weight

Ideal candidates for breast reduction should be at
or near their ideal weight and not planning significant weight loss post-surgery, as weight fluctuations can modify the outcomes of the breast reduction.

Not Planning Immediate Pregnancy

Pregnancy can alter breast size and shape, so candidates not planning to become pregnant soon after the procedure are ideal.

Non-Smokers or Willing to Quit

Smoking significantly hinders healing and increases the risk of complications. Candidates ideally should be non-smokers or willing to quit smoking well before and after the surgery.

Cost of Breast Reduction in Scottsdale AZ

The breast reduction cost can vary based on several factors, including the expertise of our surgeons, the fees for our state-of-the-art surgical facility, anesthesia costs, and the specific needs of each procedure. The complexity of your individual surgery, the necessary post-operative care and garments, and the initial consultation fee all contribute to the overall cost. Additionally, while insurance coverage can sometimes offset a portion of the expense if the procedure is deemed medically necessary, this varies by case and provider.

At Natural Results AZ, patients can generally expect the cost range for breast reductions to be between $5,000 and $10,000, though this estimate may differ based on each patient’s unique situation. We prioritize providing our patients with skilled and experienced surgeons, ensuring the highest standards of safety and satisfaction, which is an essential factor in the overall cost of the procedure.

Breast Reduction FAQS

Breast reduction is a long-term solution for patients who are affected by excessively large breasts. In cases where there is significant weight gain, the results may be compromised, just like any cosmetic procedure that modifies body shape. Natural aging and gravity will take their toll over time and will still affect the breasts with or without the reduction. It is essential to maintain a good health routine so that the enhancement lasts for a long time.
For women with larger breasts, the areola is also excessively large. In breast reduction surgery, an areola reduction is also considered. As an incision is made surrounding the areola, the excess skin will also be trimmed so that it is proportional to the breasts’ new shape.
This varies depending on the doctor’s initial evaluation and the patient’s preference. Often, the reduction results in a cup or 2 smaller than the original breast size.

Preparing to undergo breast reduction surgery involves several crucial steps to guarantee your safety and the success of the procedure. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Consultation: Have a detailed breast reduction consultation with your surgeon to understand the process and expectations.
  • Medical Evaluation: Undergo any necessary medical tests as advised by your surgeon.
  • Medication Adjustments: Discuss your current medications with your surgeon, as some may need adjustment or stopping.
  • Smoking and Alcohol: If you smoke, you’ll be advised to stop as it can affect healing. Also, avoid alcohol before surgery.
  • Fasting: You’ll likely need to fast (not eat or drink) for a certain period before the surgery.
  • Arrange for Assistance: Arrange for someone to take you home following the surgery and provide assistance for the first few days of your recovery period.
While breast reduction surgery removes a significant amount of breast tissue, the breasts can increase in size again, especially if you gain weight, become pregnant, or experience hormonal changes. However, they typically won’t return to their pre-surgery size.
Breastfeeding after a breast reduction procedure is possible, but it can be challenging. The surgery may affect milk-producing glands and ducts. This impact depends on the technique used and how much tissue is removed. It’s important to discuss this with your surgeon if future breastfeeding is a concern.
Most patients can return to non-strenuous work within 7 to 10 days. Nonetheless, it’s important to refrain from heavy lifting and engaging in strenuous activities for 6 to 8 weeks following the surgery. Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions tailored to your specific recovery process.

Yes, you will be required to wear a special compression bra after the surgery. This bra helps reduce swelling, supports the breasts during healing, and ensures the best possible shaping during recovery. Your surgeon will advise you on how long to wear it.
