Local Anesthesia. The surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area being operated on. The surgeon injects the numbing medication into the area around the knees to block pain signals during the procedure.

Incisions. Incisions are made above the knee and/or in the creases around the knee joint. The incisions are placed strategically to minimize scarring and hide it in natural folds.
