An Introduction

After significant weight loss — whether through bariatric surgery, GLP-1 medication, or dedicated lifestyle change — many patients are left with loose, hanging skin that no amount of exercise can tighten. Post-weight-loss body contouring removes that excess skin and restores a firm, proportionate shape. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Carlos Mata (Dr. Scottsdale®) designs a staged, personalized plan that may combine a tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, breast procedure, and lower body lift to address every area affected.

01
The Approach

Body Contouring After Major Weight Loss

Massive weight loss leaves behind skin that has been stretched beyond its ability to retract. The result is loose folds at the abdomen, arms, thighs, breasts, and back that cause chafing, hygiene issues, and difficulty with clothing. Body contouring removes this excess skin and re-drapes the tissue to a firm, natural contour.

Because the changes are usually circumferential, Dr. Mata approaches post-weight-loss contouring as a coordinated plan rather than a single operation — sequencing procedures for safety and the best aesthetic outcome.

02
The Plan

Procedures We Combine

Tummy Tuck / Fleur-de-Lis — Removes abdominal skin horizontally and, when needed, vertically. See tummy tuck.

Arm Lift — Addresses sagging upper-arm skin. See arm lift.

Thigh Lift — Tightens loose inner and outer thigh skin. See thigh lift.

Lower Body Lift — A circumferential procedure that lifts the abdomen, hips, buttocks, and outer thighs in one stage.

Breast Lift or Augmentation — Restores breast shape and position lost to deflation.

03
Safety First

Why We Stage the Surgery

Operating on too many areas at once increases anesthesia time and risk. Dr. Mata groups procedures into safe combinations — typically two to three areas per session — and spaces stages a few months apart. This protects your safety, improves healing, and produces a more refined final result.

Patients should be at a stable weight for at least three to six months and, if applicable, cleared by their bariatric team before contouring begins.

Candidacy

Is This Right For You?

You may be a candidate if...
  • Major weight loss (bariatric surgery, GLP-1, or lifestyle)
  • Stable weight for 3–6+ months
  • Loose, excess skin at the abdomen, arms, thighs, breasts, or back
  • Good nutrition and general health to support healing
  • Non-smoking and realistic about scars and staging
This may not be right if...
  • Still actively losing weight
  • Nutritional deficiencies that would impair healing (common post-bariatric — must be corrected first)

Candidacy is ultimately a conversation. Dr. Mata will determine the right path at consultation.

What to Expect

Every patient heals at their own pace. These milestones offer a realistic roadmap based on hundreds of procedures performed by Dr. Mata.

  1. Weeks 1–2

Compression garments, limited activity, and drains for some procedures. Rest is the priority.

  2. Weeks 3–4

Return to desk work and light routines as each area heals.

  3. Weeks 6–8

Gradual return to exercise; next stage planned if applicable.

  4. Months 3–12

Scars mature and fade; final contour settles across all treated areas.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions

01How many surgeries will I need?+

It depends on how many areas are affected. Dr. Mata typically combines two to three areas per stage and spaces stages a few months apart for safety and better healing.

02Will insurance cover any of it?+

Occasionally a panniculectomy (removal of the lower abdominal skin apron) is covered when it causes documented medical problems. Cosmetic contouring is generally self-pay. We'll help you understand your options at consultation.

03I lost weight on a GLP-1 medication — am I a candidate?+

Yes. Rapid GLP-1 weight loss produces the same loose skin as other methods. As long as your weight is stable and nutrition is sound, you're a candidate for contouring.

04Can the scars be hidden?+

Incisions are placed to sit within underwear and swimwear lines wherever possible. Scars are the trade-off for removing excess skin, and they fade substantially over the first year.
